David Loy
The All-terrain Ripper
By Brian Brannon
10.27.08
David Loy is a powerhouse skater who slices and dices big handrails just as easily as he rips transitions at the local skatepark. He has a smooth and unassuming style while rolling fast and with a purpose. Like any young dude who is coming up and killing it, David has taken some lumps from the legions of haters out there who are too busy talking trash to actually go out and skate, but I personally know the dude and can tell you that his heart is in the right place; having fun with his friends is what drives him. And if he can rip everything that’s thrown in front of him, then why shouldn’t he? I’m stoked to say that with all-terrain rippers like David out there that the future is in good hands. Ride on my man.
So David, how long have you been skating?
I think about 5 years now.
How did you get started?
My buddy that lived in my neighborhood had a board and I wanted to try it out.
Where have you been skating lately?
Um, I’ve been skating Costa Mesa park almost every night and during the day skating street.
Your brother’s a pretty good skater too, no?
Yeah he is, he’s been killing it lately. I’m super hyped on him!
What’s your favorite place to skate?
The Santa Ana ditch.
Dude, you’ve been winning all these contests but you also charge straight street, what’s that all about?
I’m not sure. I grew up skating street so that’s all I really knew. Then I found out about some local contests, so me and my friends started entering ’em and we had fun. So from then on, I continued skating street and contests. I think skating street is more fun than being competitive, ’cause I’m usually out there skating with all my friends.
Who are your homies you like to skate with?
I skate with Richie Valdez – who kills it and is a filmer – Mike Mo, Riley Hawk, Ryan Reyes, Lee Loughridge, Stephen Lawyer, Josh Borden, my little Brother Ethan, and some kids at the skatepark like Dominick, Miles, and Sterling. And pretty much whoever else loves skateboarding.
Whose style do you like?
Guy Mariano, Dennis Busenitz, Mike Mo, Tony Trujillo, Omar Salazar, Mike Carrol, and Cardiel!!!
Got any sponsors?
Birdhouse, Hurley, Spitfire, Thunder, Emerica, Active and Ogio.
Is there anyone you want to thank?
I thank God first of all. Tony Hawk for helping me at Birdhouse, Brian Sumner, the guys at Deluxe—John and Darin, Jeff and Erin at Emerica, Eric at Ogio, Aaron at Hurley, Active Erica and all the homies out there – all my friends and family!
