Philadelphyinz for the 4th of July
Text and photo by Ben Westhoff
Only Apt One of DJ duo Philadelphyinz lives in Philly; his partner Skinny Friedman lives in New York. To make things more confusing, they’re both also writers, met in high school in Pittsburgh, and over the weekend at Manhattan’s Porch Bar, were both wearing Pirates baseball caps. Luckily, they both have style and charm. Apt One sports a Sam Elliot-worthy ‘stache he’s had since he was 19 years old (“It’s kind of become my brand”), while Skinny Friedman boasts disarming schoolboy good looks. Known for their popular Wednesday block parties in Philly, at Porch they mix in Expose, James Brown, Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch, and Sean Kingston. In between sets, Apt One riffs on the difference between New York and Philadelphia DJ culture. “There are as many talented, working DJs in Philly as there are in New York, even though the city is much smaller,” he says. “It’s almost like there’s too many chiefs and not enough Indians.” Never fear that their Manhattan party ended up being quite the pow wow.
