For the last 8 months, team Antics has been zigzagging across the nation like possessed tornado hunters, feverishly in pursuit of the Perfect Party. Here, party can be loosely defined as a gathering, cultural nexus, music festival, skating expo, art gallery, witches’ brew, etc. I mean, a hot dog eating contest can be considered a party so long as there is Peter Frampton music playing.
As we wave goodbye to 2008, it feels only natural to reflect and marinate in our own nostalgic tapenade. I thought about contriving a ‘12 Days of Antics‘, but then remembered that I hate Christmas (somehow I always manage to have an extended allergy attack), and opted instead for a more prosaic list. Out of the hundreds of events we put on, the following is a run-down of the top ten West Coast Antics affairs for 2008. You might want to fetch a bib to quell the drool about to distend from your open mouth!

With one of skateboarding’s top teams, Plan B has oodles of talent to go around. What with P-Rod, Ryan Sheckler, Pat Duffy, PJ Ladd, Jereme Rogers, Ryan Gallant, Brian Wenning, Danny Way and amateur Scott Decenzo, how could you lose? But even with that much sheer ability, I’m happy to say that Plan B is not above putting out a ’zine showing the team rip rompin’ in New York, Frisco, Portland and points north, south, east and west.

This San Francisco group has been confounding critics and the public alike for over thirty years now, never once revealing their physical identities (they’re more commonly known for their trademark eyeball masks). The Residents weave dark orchestrations and surreal narratives into everything they do.

Last week at The Fonda, Sebastien Tellier really turned up the Antics. Thankfully, our ace photographer Bill Overby was at the show to capture the frenetic Frenchman in all his Euro-glory. Feast your eyes.

The Mission District of San Francisco is known for some excellent skate spots, big ol’ delicious burritos and a whole mundo of Latin culture. The DLX Crew, including Team Real, Anti-Hero, Spitfire, etc. have long standing connections with the area from a true street, curb and gutter level. And now Mission Skateboards in San Francisco is holding an exhibition called Desplazamientos Bajo y Suavecito: A show about Low Riders, a skate park, and the Mission then and now...

The title of Continuum Books’ ongoing 33 1/3 series refers to the 33 1/3 revolutions per minute of a LP. It’s an apt moniker for the revolutionary albums editor David Barker and his robust stable of incisive music journalists love to tackle. This Wednesday (Oct. 29) at 7pm, UCLA’s Hammer Musuem plays host to three 33 1/3 authors for in-depth readings and unique multimedia presentations of the research that went into upturning some of the dusty factoids surrounding three seminal indie-rock albums.

Anybody who says that skateboarding and music aren’t inextricably linked is either a liar, a kook, an ignoramus, or all of the above. From the dirty hippy radio jams of Led Zeppelin and Ted One (Nugent) in the ’70s, to the incendiary hardcore punk of the Bad Brains and Black Flag in the ’80s, to the hip-hop that don’t stop of the Beastie Boys and Wu Tang of the ’90s, to the new millennium where skaters appreciate a little bit of everything, a steady beat continues to provide the inspiration for many a session.

A quintupled phalanx of good ol’ fashioned noise, tropical punk, surf trance, and experimental rock bombarded the aptly titled Smell last Friday. South Pasadena’s David Scott Stone’s experimental music prepared the battlefield/dance floor by scorching some lobes. He reminded me of a significantly less abrasive Wizard Prison but not as maddening. Scraping noise nosedived into pools of ambience or even states of bit-tune glitch. All of it was yanked out of his battered modular synthesizer and some standard rock n’ roll gear.

Halloween is fast approaching, and I know all you hooligans are busy filling up your calendars with where to go and what to do, so I thought I’d drop this one early so you’ll know to tell everyone else their party is bunk in favor of Alva Skates’ Night of the Dead.

Who would have known that Greenpoint-based skate shop/clothing boutique Alpha(Beta) had a giant room behind the store with an adjoining backyard? Obviously someone did, because that’s where local listings ‘zine Showpaper held their benefit, along with a display of 20+ artists provided by the Brooklyn Art Collective.
