The Mission District of San Francisco is known for some excellent skate spots, big ol’ delicious burritos and a whole mundo of Latin culture. The DLX Crew, including Team Real, Anti-Hero, Spitfire, etc. have long standing connections with the area from a true street, curb and gutter level. And now Mission Skateboards in San Francisco is holding an exhibition called Desplazamientos Bajo y Suavecito: A show about Low Riders, a skate park, and the Mission then and now...

In this age of mondo-corporate-consumer-driven-skateboarding-mega-hype-marketing-media-blitzes, it’s good to know that there are still a few fine photocopied ’zines making the rounds among the hardcore skate types. One such fine publication is Diehard, put together by Texas pool ruler Ronny Ripper. Like most good ’zines, publication is irregular at best. I mean, he started doing it in 1986 and he just came out with the eighth issue. You do the math… But, the good news is it’s worth the wait.

The 2nd annual Stoked Awards, presented by Toyota Matrix is set to go down at the Red Bull Space in New York City on November 12. The event’s founder, Stoked Mentoring, is an action sports non-profit organization behind the event, recognizes individuals for “developing successful teens through opportunity, knowledge, experience and determination.” If you’re in the Big Apple tomorrow night, and are into big-hitters in the action sports world who are doing big things for today’s youth, be sure to check it out. Who knows? A certain Hawk might even end up flying through.

Forget New Jersey being called the Garden State, with a brand spankin’ new park on tap, it is now properly known as the Garden Skate. Hesh or fresh, skateboarders in New Jersey are set for the winter with a huge 1,200 square foot indoor park called GardenSk8 that just opened this weekend.

Skateboarding lost another great one with the passing of Steven Picciolo, one of the original pool skaters, due to liver failure. Though his skills on roundwall were never fully publicized to the skate community at large, his aggressive tendencies in early holes down Dogtown way solidified his reputation for those who saw him ride. Credited with early tail taps and frontside airs two feet out of the Topanga square in 1977, which boasted four feet of vert, Steven was by accounts ahead of his time. Winner of the 1975 Del Mar Nationals, that contest that brought the Z-Boys to infamy, Steven’s inspiration will continue to live wherever a hardcore session is going down.

He’s known for his work in the halfpipe, but Tony Hawk is not just a high flier on ramps anymore. The original birdman will receive the Stoked Achievement Award at the 2nd annual Stoked Awards, presented by Toyota Matrix in New York City on November 12. Stoked Mentoring, the action sports non-profit organization behind the event, recognizes individuals for “developing successful teens through opportunity, knowledge, experience and determination.”

Hats off to Darren Navarette for throwing THEE best vert contest in a long, long time. The Rumble in Ramona was so good, it shouldn’t be called a contest. Just a bunch of bros (who happen to be some of the best vert skaters of all time), hitting the halfpipe hard and heavy, just like in the old days, with $1 beverages, burgers on the grill, classic cars and even a burlesque style bikini contest to round out the session.

Anybody who says that skateboarding and music aren’t inextricably linked is either a liar, a kook, an ignoramus, or all of the above. From the dirty hippy radio jams of Led Zeppelin and Ted One (Nugent) in the ’70s, to the incendiary hardcore punk of the Bad Brains and Black Flag in the ’80s, to the hip-hop that don’t stop of the Beastie Boys and Wu Tang of the ’90s, to the new millennium where skaters appreciate a little bit of everything, a steady beat continues to provide the inspiration for many a session.

Rolling forth to spread the word of high speed skate annihilation, look for the dynamic duo of the Deathwish and Baker teams to crack tails, bonk noses and flick flips at selected points below the Mason/Dixon line on their Dirty South tour. No telling what might happen when you get guys like Andrew Reynolds, Erik Ellington, Jim Greco, Dustin Dolin, Jeff Lenoce, Lizard King, Spanky, Bryan Herman, Beagle, Terry Kennedy, Slash, Antwaun Dixon, Braydon Szafranski and a whole slew of crew together with some Southern belles and good ol’ down-South hospitality.
