Art Disaster!

image

By Antics Staff

Even on the eve of SXSW, Austin’s Beauty Bar shows no signs of taking it easy. Neither do we at Antics, and tomorrow night (Mar. 17) we’ll team up with our favorite little venue in Texas to present Art Disaster. The lineup of bands and DJs is extensive, including Pomegranates, DJ Orion, The Happy Hollows and many more. And fear not, the usual Antics bag of tricks will be present too, along with some righteous drink specials.

Wallpaper & N.A.S.A. at Noise Pop. Mezzanine, San Francisco

image

By Jake Anderson with photo by Cameron Platt

Touting itself as San Francisco’s preeminent celebration of independent music, film, and art since 1993, Noise Pop has been raging for the last six days across an enormous swath of the city’s amazing venues--from the downtown Apple Store to The Bottom of the Hill and the Great American Music Hall.  The lineup featured an electic array of bands, performers and deejays, including Mike Relm, No Age, Ra Ra Riot, Stephen Malkmus, and dozens of others.

Deerhunter. Mezzanine, San Francisco.

image

By Jake Anderson

I had been listening to a lot of Deerhunter recently before seeing them live last week at the Mezzanine in San Fransisco.  Their first major album, Cryptograms, is a lush treasure chest of ambient hypnotic songs that occasionally hint at melodies but more often then not recede back into beautiful noise. Their followup, Microcastle, has more pop feel and clearly defined song structures, even sustained melodies. When we arrived at the venue they were doing sound check and I could tell they were going to test out some new material, which is a strange cross-pollination of their first and second albums.

LA Riots. The Church, Denver.

LA Riots

Text and photos by Robert Castro

Do you remember where you where in 1992?  Many of us were clued to our television sets watching the Los Angeles riots unfold right in front of our eyes.  On Thursday night the Mile High City of Denver, Colorado witnessed a different form of LA Riots, this time in the form of the DJ super-group hailing from the left coast.  The bill originally also featured Kid Cudi, who ultimately cancelled last minute to be on BET’s 106 and Park show to debut his new video Day N’ Nite. :-(

Antics’ Noise Pop ‘09 Opening Night Party

image

By Antics Staff

Hear ye, hear ye! Antics is teaming up with ASCAP and Filter for a killer event at Mezzanine in San Francisco tomorrow night, the opening night of Noise Pop, and we’ll even get to feature one of the festival’s main events. Deerhunter and Lilofee are scheduled for live sets, while Aaron Axelson and Omar (Popscene) are to spin the proverbial discs. No better way to kick it off in San Fran.

Wendy Darling at Beauty Bar, 2/21

image

Wendy Darling

By Antics Staff

No, we’re not talking about the little girl who Peter Pan kidnaps. Turns out, Wendy Darling is also the name of a fresh, Californian indie band, too. The foursome is set to take the stage at one of Antics‘ favorite San Diego hotspots, Beauty Bar this Saturday, February 21. We’ll be there as well, with all of our usual magic tricks and matrices. We hope to see you there, at the most beautiful of all venues. Who knows, maybe you’ll end up getting swept off to Neverneverland anyway.

Chairlift

Shrouded in mysticism with a touch of pop sensibility, Brooklyn’s Chairlift are emerging as one of the top acts to watch in 2009. Last year they shared the stage with friends MGMT and Yeasayer. Now they are leading tours on their own, and this Saturday in Miami, Antics will host them at the White Room for another fabulous POPLIFE party.

Pre-Grammy Museum Party!

image

By Antics Staff

In December, the Grammy Museum became a part of the booming L.A. Live cultural epicenter in downtown Los Angeles, a tribute to the celebrated artists who have won the prestigious award and the art and technology of the recording process alike. On Sunday night, February 8, we at Antics will smash our own proverbial champagne bottle on the bow of the Grammy Museum, hosting a feverishly exciting pre-Grammy bonanza, right in the heart of all the commotion next to the Staples Center.

Red Bull Snowscrapers

image

Shaun White

By Johnny Wombus

This Thursday, February 5, 17 of the world’s best snowboarders, including Red Bull team standouts Shaun White, Travis Rice and Pat Moore, will compete for a ginormous $100,000 purse in the Red Bull Snowscrapers Big Air Challenge. This particular event is especially unique, in that there will be no mountains in sight. The New York City skyline, however, will be in full view, as the contest is to be held on a giant, constructed ramp smack in the middle of East River Park! How’s about that? As a bonus, champion musical acts such as Anthrax and Black Gold will be setting the score as the best riders in the world aim to settle their own.

Antics Hearts FL

image

Text and photos by Brian Simmons

With a two day, 1200ish mile drive (that included crossing eight states) it was great to say goodbye to the cold depths of the northeast winter and be greeted by the Sunshine State. We kicked things off right by starting in warm Miami. As we cruised into town with sunroofs wide open, past the beaches and beautiful people, I had to fight the urge to keep saying snappy catchphrases while putting on my sunglasses.
