Following the 2009 Winter Dew Tour‘s final stop at Northstar-at-Tahoe, ANTICS threw the biggest and baddest after party to ever hit the slopes. A good time was had by all - including host Todd Richards, who served master of ceremonies, and DJs QBert and Shaun Slaughter - and we have the photos to prove it. Take a gander!

I had been listening to a lot of Deerhunter recently before seeing them live last week at the Mezzanine in San Fransisco. Their first major album, Cryptograms, is a lush treasure chest of ambient hypnotic songs that occasionally hint at melodies but more often then not recede back into beautiful noise. Their followup, Microcastle, has more pop feel and clearly defined song structures, even sustained melodies. When we arrived at the venue they were doing sound check and I could tell they were going to test out some new material, which is a strange cross-pollination of their first and second albums.

LA Riots
Text and photos by Robert Castro
Do you remember where you where in 1992? Many of us were clued to our television sets watching the Los Angeles riots unfold right in front of our eyes. On Thursday night the Mile High City of Denver, Colorado witnessed a different form of LA Riots, this time in the form of the DJ super-group hailing from the left coast. The bill originally also featured Kid Cudi, who ultimately cancelled last minute to be on BET’s 106 and Park show to debut his new video Day N’ Nite. :-(

Wendy Darling
By Antics Staff
No, we’re not talking about the little girl who Peter Pan kidnaps. Turns out, Wendy Darling is also the name of a fresh, Californian indie band, too. The foursome is set to take the stage at one of Antics‘ favorite San Diego hotspots, Beauty Bar this Saturday, February 21. We’ll be there as well, with all of our usual magic tricks and matrices. We hope to see you there, at the most beautiful of all venues. Who knows, maybe you’ll end up getting swept off to Neverneverland anyway.

For NBA basketball lovers, downtown Phoenix was a verdant land of hope, hype and merchandising this last week. To herald in All-Star Weekend, David Stern personally cordoned off a city block outside the convention center for a “Block Party”, a festival featuring test-your-might dunk and H.O.R.S.E contests, dance-offs, TNT cardboard cutouts, and Beyonce and Justin Timberlake, or their music as covered by a couple of bands.

Chairlift
By Brian Simmons, photo by Jason Klauber
Shrouded in mysticism with a touch of pop sensibility, Brooklyn’s Chairlift are emerging as one of the top acts to watch in 2009. Last year they shared the stage with friends MGMT and Yeasayer. Now they are leading tours on their own, and this Saturday in Miami, Antics will host them at the White Room for another fabulous POPLIFE party.

With a two day, 1200ish mile drive (that included crossing eight states) it was great to say goodbye to the cold depths of the northeast winter and be greeted by the Sunshine State. We kicked things off right by starting in warm Miami. As we cruised into town with sunroofs wide open, past the beaches and beautiful people, I had to fight the urge to keep saying snappy catchphrases while putting on my sunglasses.

It’s tough to have fun these days. Unemployment’s up and the economy’s got everybody down. True story: a toddler skipped past me the other day and blurted, “Biggest plunge in the GDP in 26 years, can you believe it?” But I always have faith in the determination of San Francisco’s Popscene to pack a mean punch on a Thursday night.

Last weekend, we went up to Sacramento last weekend and did an Antics event. Street lights. People. Living just to find emotion/Hiding somewhere in the night....ooops sorry, I lapsed into some Journey there. We auctioned off custom designed skateboard decks. It was like a scene from 28 Days Later how badly those Sacto folks wanted the boards. It was as if the city government had been systematically depriving them of boards for twenty years, and there we were marching in with decks designed by smoking-hot local artists. Not even the frigid post-sun temperatures could hold back a legion of red-eyed Sacramentonians from waiting to hear their names drawn and called.
