I had been listening to a lot of Deerhunter recently before seeing them live last week at the Mezzanine in San Fransisco. Their first major album, Cryptograms, is a lush treasure chest of ambient hypnotic songs that occasionally hint at melodies but more often then not recede back into beautiful noise. Their followup, Microcastle, has more pop feel and clearly defined song structures, even sustained melodies. When we arrived at the venue they were doing sound check and I could tell they were going to test out some new material, which is a strange cross-pollination of their first and second albums.

Before blogs, ’zines were the poor skater’s voice and photo gallery. You’d think with the explosion of the Internet they’d be all but dead, but like the old school skate rats who keep putting ‘em out, you just can’t keep ‘em down.
My buddy Rob Locker of AZPX Skateboards got together with his son Mason and put out a ‘zine a while back with silly drawings and rad skating all over it. Of course, being the self-absorbed rapscallion that he is, he named it after himself, calling it “Rubber Toe,” which after all is Spanish for Robert. All in all, it was a pretty dang fine first issue. And it did so well he’s doing another. Heck, he’s even started a skateboard company called Rubber Toe…

When it comes to pools, Arizona is the place to be. Trust me on this one kiddies…
So what better place to throw an authentic bowl bash than in the backyard of Jimmy the Greek and Heidi Fitzgerald? Their pool is no rock walk in the skatepark, it’s the real deal. So throwing a lein to disaster here like Chris Livingston did means a bit more than on some perfectly sculpted piece of skatepark ‘crete. And throw down was exactly what went down, with the ol’ tricks-for-cash-and-prizes game being played amidst a suitable backdrop of music, mayhem and madness.
